Abstract

In an increasingly digital world, SSL/TLS encryption has become essential for securing data transmitted over networks. While these protocols play a crucial role in safeguarding sensitive information, they also introduce performance considerations that organizations must address. This paper examines the impact of SSL/TLS on network performance, highlighting the benefits and the challenges. SSL/TLS encryption can add latency and reduce throughput due to the additional computational overhead required for encrypting and decrypting data. However, the advantages of protecting data integrity, confidentiality, and authenticity far outweigh the potential drawbacks. As cyber threats continue to evolve, the necessity for robust encryption becomes paramount. This study explores various strategies to optimize SSL/TLS performance, such as utilizing hardware acceleration, session resumption techniques, and tuning cypher suites. It also emphasizes adopting best practices for certificate management and critical exchange processes to minimize latency.
